quilt artist - graphic designer - web designer- surfer

Nana Montgomery is an artist who makes contemporary quilts. Her compositions are pictorial, considering the whole surface of the quilt as a canvas where she creates a painting with fabric. Abstracted into an archetypal symbol, a figure often inhabits the landscape of the quilt in a house shape which represents different places where we live; both physically and emotionally. Her work seeks to express both the universal and the personal experience of these places.

Combining fabric and paint to create her images, Montgomery's quilts are constructed in a traditional manner, using cotton fabrics and filling. Paint and other embellishments are applied after the quilt is constructed to enhance the surface design. The process and tactility of combining paint with appliqued fabric add an important spontaneity to the work.

Nana holds a Master's Degree in Fine Art from San Francisco State University where she focused on merging her quilts with painting and developing a personal style. Her art quilts have been shown in one-person and group shows throughout the Bay Area, including several juried shows at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles.

Nana lives in Santa Cruz where she runs her own graphic design business, Blue Shark Design Company.
